Dawn redwood

Metasequoia glyptostoboides

Height 15-30 m, bole up to 80 cm. Deciduous. Trunk is fluted with shaggy reddish bark. Sparse branches sweep upwards, producing a narrow conical tree. Leaves are linear and flat, .5-2-5 cm x 2-3 mm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Discovered in 1941 in China, now grown in Europe as an ornamental tree. Grows fastest in wet areas.

What are its young like?

Flowers on shoots of the previous year, in winter. Male cones are rare. Female cones are egg-shaped, rather pointed and ripen to brown in the first autumn. Buds are unique, appearing below branches.
