Douglas fir

Pseudotsuga menziesii

Tall, broadly conical tree, 25-60 m, bole up to 1 m diameter. Evergreen. Bark is dark grey. Needles are flat and grow all around the shoot, becoming dark glossy above, with two white bands beneath, 2-3 cm long.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to North America. Grown for timber in Europe. Prefers moist, acidic, sheltered conditions.

What are its young like?

Male flowers are yellow, female flowers are redm shaped like a tassel. Cones are pendulus, 7-10 cm long, light brown, with three pointed bract scales projecting.
