Aleppo pine

Pinus halepensis

Height 20 m, bole up to 50 cm diameter. Evergreen, coniferous. Conical when young, maturing into rounded tree. Bark is silver-grey, maturing to red-brown with age. Needles in pairs, radial along shoot; they stay on tree for two years, 6-11 cm x 0.7 mm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to Mediterranean. Prefers, dry hillside country. Often planted as a wind-break.

What are its young like?

Flowers on current season's growth, in early summer. Fruit matures in 5-12 x 2.5-3.5 cm, but often stays on tree unopened for several years. Seeds have a wing 20 mmlong.
