Black poplar

Populus nigra

Height usually 15-25 m, sometimes up to 40 m. Bole up to 1 m diameter. Deciduous. The crown is a large dome with spreading fissures. Brak is grey-brown, with fissures and sometimes with burrs. Leaves are oval, with long pointed tip, about 8 cm long.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Probably native to Britain. Widely planted as a windbreak, beside roads, flourishes by water.

What are its young like?

Male red and female green catkins form on separate trees. Fluffy seeds disperse in June.
