Corsican pine

Pinus nigra

Height up to 40 m, bole to 1.3 m diameter. Evergreen. Crown cone-shaped at first, but becomes more like a column as branches spread. Needles grey-green, in bundles of two, 12-18 cm x 1.5 mm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to Sicily, Calabria and Corsica. Used for forestry in Britain.

What are its young like?

Flowers in early summer on current season's growth. Female flowers pink, male flowers yellow and purple. Fruit ripens in second autumn - yellow or grey-brown cone, 5-9 x 3.5 cm.
