Japanese white pine

Pinus parviflora

Height 20 m, bole 60 cm diameter. Evergreen. Crown is a broad cone-shape, becoming more rounded or flat-topped. Bark is smooth, purple-grey. Leaves mid-green, bundles of five, twisted, 2-6 cm x 11-1.5 mm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to Japan. Cultivated as ornamental in Europe. Temperate mixed forest.

What are its young like?

Flowers in early summer on current season's growth. Female cones green or pink, the male cones are pink-purple. Fruit amtures in second autumn - a stick brown cone, 5-7 x 2.5-3 cm. Seeds 1-1.3 cm long.
