Japanese larch

Larix Kaempferi

Height up to 30 m, bole up to 80 cm diameter. Deciduous, coniferous. Long, thick, horizontal branches, though can "corkscrew". Bark is similar to European larch but more orange. Needles are blue-green, singly on line shoots, clustered in rosettes on short shoots. Purple cast in autumn.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to Japan. Widespread timer tree in north-west Europe.

What are its young like?

Male flowers are yellow and globe-shaped, female flowers are greenish or pink. Cones are squat and rounded with scales, 2.5-3 x 2-2.5 cm.
