Heath speedwell

Veronica officinalis

Up to 10 cm tall. Low-growing perennial with a mat-forming habit. Prostrate stems root at the nodes and are hairy all round. Leaves are stalked, ovate to elliptical, toothed and softly hairy. Flowers are 8 mm across, lilac-blue with dark veins, and comprise four equal sepal lobes and four unequal petal lobes.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Grassy woodland rides and dry heathland areas.

What's its life cycle or behaviour pattern?

May-August

What is its current UK distribution?

Widespread and locally common across most of Europe.
