Common sorrel

Rumex acetosa

Up to 60 cm tall. An upright perennial. Leaves are dark green and shaped like an arrowhead; the lower ones are stalked while the upper ones are stalkless and clasp the stem. Leaves taste of vinegar. Flowers are reddish and borne in upright slender spikes. Occasionally the whole plant may be tinged red.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Favours a wide range of grassy habitats, from meadows and woodland rides to coastal cliffs and dunes.

What's its life cycle or behaviour pattern?

Flowers May-July

What is its current UK distribution?

Widespread and common throughout much of Europe except for the far south.
