Emperor moth
Saturnia pavonia
Forewing is 34-42 mm. Large moth with single big startling eyespots on both fore and hindwings. Female is larger and paler than male. Larva is green, banded black with tufts.
What habitats does it normally live in?
Found in moors, heaths, montainsides and woodland. Occurs widely throughout Europe and Britisg Isles.
What does it feed upon?
Flies in spring, laying eggs in May. Larvae feed principally on heather but also a range of other plants including bramble, blackthorn, hawthorn and bilberry. Overwinters as pupa.
