Fox moth
Macrothylacia rubi
Forewing is 20-30 mm. Males are fox-coloured, with two narrow pale strips on the forewings: females are paler. The larva is velvety and very dark brown, with orange bands.
What habitats does it normally live in?
Heathland, moorland, open countryside and woodland margins.
What does it feed upon?
Flies May to July. The males flies in sunshine and at night, the female is a purely nocturnal flier. Larvae feed on bramble, heather, bilberry and creeping willow. Overwinters as a full-grown larva.
