Hover-fly (Syrphus ribesii)

Syrphus ribesii

About 10 mm long. Yellow and black striped with rounded abdomen. Larva is green and slug-like. There are several similar species.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Flower-rich habitats across Europe.

What does it feed upon?

Flying adults seen from March to November. Males perch on leaves and twigs up to 2.5 metres from the ground and make high-pitched whining song. Feeds mainly on nectar, but will crush and swallow pollen. Larvae feed on aphids.
