Event details

15 September 2017 - 10:00am - 4:00pm

Course Overview Phase 1 Surveys provide the botanist and ecologist with a simple standardised method of surveying and classifying a wide range of vegetation and habitats. Despite often being undertaken by junior ecologists, accurate identification of Phase 1 Habitats requires a high level of species identification skills. This course aims to develop the amateur or professional surveyors’ identification skills in those common species used in Phase 1 Surveying. We will look at a range of species that can help to separate the different types of grassland, woodland and heathland as well as other habitats. Covering the dominant species (such as the commoner Grasses, Sedges and Rushes; flowering plants and trees). Time will be spent identifying individual species and understanding their role within the Phase 1 classification. Emphasis will be placed on key characters to distinguish each species from similar looking plants. By the end of the course participants will be able to distinguish a wide selection of dominant species. A must for anyone embarking on a career as an ecologist; as well as suitable for those who have already got experience of Phase 1 but would like to brush up on their ID skills. Course Tutor Mark Duffell has had a lifetime interest in plants gaining the RHS Diploma in Horticulture, becoming 'Young Horticulturist of the Year' in 2001 and completing an MSc in Biological Recording and Species Identification. He now runs Arvensis Ecology splitting his time between conducting botanical surveys and teaching botanical identification and survey techniques to undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities, consultants and environmental organisations
